JEWISH BOTTLENECK

The Jewish population of eastern and central Europe soon sunk to historic lows. Expulsions and murderous pogroms were sandwiched around the great catastrophe of the time, the Black Death. The bubonic plague wreaked destruction in the Near East before spreading to Europe, wiping out a third or more of its population between 1348 and 1351. Jews were often blamed for spreading the disease by poisoning wells and were often tortured until they confessed their complicity. Pope Clement IV moved to quash the absurd charges, blaming the scourge on the devil in a papal decree, but to no avail. The inflamed peasantry ignored similar edicts by secular rulers. Thousands of Jews were murdered, many burned at the stake, and hundreds of Jewish communities in southern and central Europe were uprooted. Decimated by the Crusades and the Black Death, pariahs in their longtime homes in France and Germany, the Jews of Europe were driven eastward, into Bohemia and Moravia, Lithuania, and the Kingdom of Poland.
